Tell us about your journey so far within Selfridges Group and your recent experience with the LEAP programme.

I started my career in Selfridges Group as a Buying Assistant within the Food & Interiors Department at Brown Thomas. I worked with a fantastic team and learned a great deal within a short period of time.

When I saw that Holt Renfrew had a posted an Assistant Buyer opportunity for Gift, Gourmet & Kidswear, I jumped at the opportunity to apply immediately. I was talked through the LEAP programme offerings by the People team at Selfridges Group who supported me throughout the whole process from the interview stage to my Canadian visa application and even an apartment search! The weekly catch-ups with Selfridges Group made me feel like everything was looked after and it made my relocation to Canada a lot less daunting. I was also in contact with Isabella who is also a LEAP candidate and acted as a LEAP mentor as she has been through the LEAP programme and is originally from Toronto so could give me lots of tips!

What motivated you to seek opportunities within Selfridges Group rather than looking elsewhere?

I wanted to further my career within Selfridges Group as we have such a large international stamp. The banners are forward-thinking and are continually developing and leading in the luxury retail industry. I want to continue learning and growing in this company and challenge myself when given career opportunities such as LEAP!

Having experienced working in the Seasonal Food department at Brown Thomas, I was excited to pass on my knowledge at Holt Renfrew.

What do you love about working for Selfridges Group?

Selfridges Group has a beautiful portfolio of leading luxury department stores, and I’m very proud to be a part of it. During my time off, I used to love to stroll through de Bijenkorf and now being in Dublin, I often frequent Brown Thomas to see what’s going on in our physical stores. Working in the Multichannel team is dynamic and fast-paced. There’s a lot of scope for improvement and change, so there are many exciting projects in the works. I think it’s amazing that I got the opportunity to relocate on secondment to Brown Thomas in Dublin through the LEAP programme.

How have you benefited from moving within the Group?

The LEAP programme is such a good opportunity to broaden your horizons. It’s been great to bring and share my previous experience from de Bijenkorf to Brown Thomas and Arnotts, but there’s also a lot I have learned since joining Brown Thomas and Arnotts. I’ve grown so much personally through taking this opportunity to move to a different country.

What have been your career highlights?

In 2017, I helped bring WeChat Pay and AliPay to Holt Renfrew; we became the first luxury retailer to launch these payment solutions in Canada. The journey began in 2016 with focus groups to understand how sales associates and personal shoppers catered to international customers. We quickly learned that WeChat was the key communication tool used by international customers. To capitalise on this opportunity, we ramped up internal resources and engaged with 3rd party vendors. We successfully launched across 9 stores and saw an immediate uptake.

In 2018, I was given the opportunity to go to Selfridges Group through the LEAP programme and I didn’t hesitate to jump at this once in a lifetime experience!

Describe the experience of living in London and working in Group Finance.

It was so great working with Group Finance and to work side by side with the colleagues that I have been familiar with since my time at Holt Renfrew. I really valued the opportunity to continue building my work relationship with Group Finance and also establishing new connections with banner finance communities. London is a beautiful city with a lot to offer; whether through its rich history, arts and culture, parks, events, shops and world renowned brands.

Describe your experience of living in London and working in Group People

I moved to London from Toronto in January 2018, and it has been one of the most exhilarating times of my life. I count myself very fortunate to have been chosen as the first LEAP candidate and to be exposed to other working practices and perspectives. One of my projects is working on LEAP which has given me the opportunity to support LEAP candidates in their journeys within our Group. I look forward to continuing to learn from my secondment and taking these experiences and skills back to Holt Renfrew.

What advice would you give to someone considering taking part in LEAP?

If you are interested in taking part in LEAP, I recommend you open an honest dialogue about your career ambitions and mobility status with your line manager. Being exposed to a different banner, work streams and cultures is a great way to broaden your skillsets and experience- what better way to do this all while being supported throughout your relocation by Selfridges Group!

What sort of person do you think would best benefit from the LEAP program?

Colleagues that embrace a new environment, different organisational culture and ways of working would benefit most from the LEAP program. Apart from dealing with the change yourself, coming from a different banner means you can bring change as well by sharing best practices. If you get excited from elevating all of our banners to the highest standard and enjoy stepping out of your comfort zone, then LEAP is definitely something for you!

What advice would you give to someone considering taking part in LEAP?

Dare to step out of your comfort zone because that is where the magic happens. LEAP is a great opportunity for not only growth business-wise but also personal. You are dealing with multiple complexities in different areas you would normally not face when making a step within your own organisation.

What motivated you to seek opportunities within Selfridges Group rather than looking elsewhere?

By seeking an opportunity within Selfridges Group, I found it is easier to share best practices/successes of my respective area which enables me to support the other banner in getting to that next level. It avoids reinventing the wheel and is more efficient.
