A Monumental Mural at de Bijenkorf

22 January 2016

Creative and innovative ideas continue to flow from the ‘Room on the Roof’ at de Bijenkorf Amsterdam, with its latest artist in residence, Job Wouters.

With renovation works continuing in store, including the replacement of escalators, Wouters has taken one of the giant white hoardings in the main atrium as his canvas and transformed it into a stunning mural.

A huge 200 square meter grid was applied to the wall made up of 22 boxes. Wouters and his four assistants then painted each one of these boxes with a large brush covered in two paint colours to create a gradient. The result is a gigantic coloured wall, resembling tile mosaics, tapestries and embroidery.

Such hoardings are traditionally covered in "work in progress" messages so Wouters saw this as a great opportunity to develop a new visual language, unique to de Bijenkorf.

This colourful and dynamic work is Wouters' largest to date and is in store for the next five months.
